Installation Research

  • Visually determined optimal hanging heights for every art standard size based on Chief Creative Officer’s guidelines

  • Extrapolated predictive formula for non-standard art sizes

  • Developed cheat sheets and guidelines to hand off to on-site installation teams in order to properly hang artwork developed by the Art & Graphics team

  • Utilized extensively in developing space standards

Visual Confirmation

While our original rule for hanging artwork was a generalized 58” to center from the floor, we received reports from our teams and Global Art Director that this felt too low for smaller pieces and too high for extra large pieces.

To confirm, we projected each size, bordered with the appropriate frame and mat width, at a 1:1 scale and optically adjusted it to determine its optimal hanging height.

Standard Height Chart

The resulting standard size hanging height chart was developed based on the height of the artwork or its frame height.

Estimation of Non-Standard Heights

By plotting the standard frame heights versus their top hanging heights, we generated a regression line that allowed us to estimate about how high the top of a non-standard sized piece should be hung. Applying this formula at increments of 5”, we created a chart that on-site installers could use to estimate the hanging height of any piece.

Hanging Cheat Sheet

The above information was compiled together with other general hanging guidelines to create a one-page cheat sheet designers could hand off to on-site teams for the proper installation of artwork. This information was also translated into metric for dissemination to international teams.
